25 It is ideal to have the financial flexibility for you to stop work allowing for concentrated periods of studying or to reduce your stress level. You must be available to attend lectures and examinations. EMPLOYMENT WHILE STUDYING When deciding whether or not to take on any part time work it is important to be realistic about the amount of hours you can still manage to dedicate to study, the work and spare time for friends and hobbies. The amount of time you will have free will determine the kind of work you’ll look for. TEMPORARY OR LEASED EMPLOYEES Anyone that seeks employment using temporary agencies are the most common type of leased employees. All temporary employment agencies are companies that establish contracts with other businesses to provide workers on a contingency basis. Temporary agencies will handle all payroll, tax, and the other human resources functions for their workers. BODY LANGUAGE BLUNDERS A weak and infirm handshake, wandering eyes, and fidgeting are only a few examples of actions that can make an interview go south. Interviewers will usually consider any of these to be very insecure and negative behaviours on your part and will doubt you are right for the position. It could likely be a deciding factor between you and other candidates vying for the same job. Try practicing in front of a mirror, and get a friend to videotape you, or see a career councilor. Here are some examples of what not to do when attending an interview. Eye Contact • • • Smile • • Mirroring • Arms And Hands • • • BUILDING YOUR RESUME If you have never had any job before, writing a resume can seem like a daunting task. However, it’s not as difficult as you might think. Employers are looking for something creative but not over the top. Use a nicer style of stock of paper rather than a generic computer paper. Don’t use crazy fonts, and don’t make the point size too small. There is also a lot of debate on whether or not you should stick to just one page when writing a resume. If you’ve had a lot of experience, only use Look directly into the eyes of the person who is interviewing you, but be sure not to stare. Don’t look down, or away. These are considered signs of confusion and not being confident. Never roll your eyes, as this is disrespectful. Smiling is very important at the beginning and at the end of the interview. Smile as it shows an interviewer that you appear enthusiastic about the job position that you have applied for. It also relays that you are friendly. Closely watch positions and expressions of your interviewer. You can be expressive using your hands, but not to the extent of distracting your interviewer. Keep your arms loose and at your side instead of crossing your arms which will make you look defensive. Try to keep a more open posture. Do not fidget, play with your hair or a pen, or bite your nails. 499 MAIN ST.
