30 LAYAWAY ANOTHER WAY TO PURCHASE Layaway is a handy purchase plan designed for customers who want to buy merchandise without using credit or paying the full price immediately. Layaway plans could be offered by some stores that sell durable or non-perishable merchandise. Layaways are the opposite from credit purchases. When you use a layaway plan you will pay in full through installments before you can acquire any of the merchandise, and there are no or very low additional charges. Terms of layaway plans vary from store to store. With most plans you’ll make a deposit, usually a percentage of the purchase price. The remaining amount due is paid over a period of time. Remember, until you completely finish paying for the layaway item, the retailer has your money and the merchandise. If the store closes and goes out of business while you are still paying, your money and the merchandise may be lost. If you have not shopped in that store before, you might start out by purchasing a relatively inexpensive item on their layaway plan. CONSUMER PSYCHOLOGY We all have our individual idea of what luxury is, meaning: how much you would be willing to spend on your next pair of shoes, or that clothing item you’ve been itching to buy. Recent studies have shown that shoppers price perceptions are being altered simply because of how much some brand name manufacturers are charging for what they’re selling. The “glass roof” of buyer perception has been shattered. Some people attempt trying to justify their pricey purchases $300 on a pair of sunglasses, $500 for a single sweater solely on the fact that the store they’ve walked into sells much more expensive goods. While some people can obviously afford that $400 designer purse, most of us cannot. So we find the way to compensate, but regardless, some of us still often buy such simple things like clothing, or jewellery at staggeringly high prices. It softens the blow a bit, and it makes life a little easier to swallow. Easier, that is, if you’d rather look stylish than eat or pay the rent. CREDIT TIPS Remember that any credit requires a subsequent payment, so know just how much you can afford before purchasing something on credit.
