2024-2025 Student Resource Handbook
32 Five Thrifty Tips 1. If possible, always make purchases in bulk. Look at the difference in the price between one can of coke and a pack of six, or a two-pack of toilet paper and a pack of twelve. It works out a lot cheaper in the long run. 2. Never go food shopping on an empty stomach. You will be hungry and will likely be more tempted to buy what you don’t need. 3. Try shopping nearer the end of the day. Stores usually reduce the pricing of perishable foods so that it will sell quickly and avoid going bad. 4. Look out for store discounts. Many shops offer student discounts, but don’t advertise it. If you do not ask for it then you won’t get it. 5. Share the cost. Get as many people as you can to share the cost of things when going out. The more people involved, the less cost per person. SAVE MONEY ON GROCERIES • • • PROTECT YOURSELF SHOPPING ONLINE This is the easier and quicker way to shop from the comfort of your home. But before whipping out your credit card and embarking on an online shopping spree, be sure to remember these few safety tips. Ensure that the site you are on is secure by looking for a lock icon at the bottom of the screen or a website who’s address begins with https://. Search for the merchant’s name, address and telephone number on their website so you know who to contact for more information. Clip out coupons from your local paper, or print them out from online. Make a list before you go to the grocery store, and stick to it. Make a budget and only bring cash. Find out what the merchant is doing to protect and how they intend to use your confidential and personal information by reviewing their privacy policy. Don’t respond to e-mails trying to obtain personal information, especially if the addresses include what is called “phishing”. This is a form of criminal activity that uses social engineering techniques. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in electronic communications online.
