Unsheathe The Credit Card The stretch of Bloor Street between Yonge Street andAvenue Road with its many neighbouring side streets are one of the most popular and trendy shopping areas in Toronto, housing several large, well known fashion and jewelry companies. The Bloor Street/Yorkville area is one of the most luxurious shopping streets to be found in North America, and is frequently compared to the likes of Fifth Ave in New York, and Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, or Chicago’s famous Magnificent Mile. This prestigious area commands an average rent of $300 per square foot, which makes it the third most expensive retail space that is available in North America and home to many top merchants. 8. Eat Your Way Around The World Welcome to one of the world’s most diverse cities in the world with 49% of it’s population having been born outside Canada, so the presence of areas like Chinatown, a Greektown, a Little Italy and various communities hailing from Portugal, Poland and Jamaica can not come as any surprise. Whatever it is that your cosmopolitan palate may crave, you can eat it all in this town. In the summer, you can try Summerlicious, or in the winter enjoy Winterlicious. And, in-between festivals is ‘Taste of the Danforth’ that’s held every year in August. 9. Behold Delusions Of Grandeur Back in the nineteenth century the wealthy chose to remain aloof from all the great unwashed by creating pleasure domes high on the hill of Casa Loma. One such moneybags was the renowned financier James Austin, with his lavish manse, Spadina Historic House & Gardens, gives us a fascinating insight into the high society life. More sublimely ridiculous is the ostentatious folly Casa Loma, being designed by the grandiloquent architect EJ Lennox for magnate Sir Henry Pellat. Further Lennox lavishness are to be experienced in the downtown Le Meridien King Edward hotel, whose guests go around with a crick in their neck from gawking at soaring marble splendours all around. 10. Applaud A Dramatic Theatre Venue Toronto has an impressive theatre scene. They are just as memorable for their architecture as they are for what happens on stage. The two most show stopping venues are Elgin & Winter Garden 12. Think On Your Feet Comedy is second only to hockey as Canada’s most important export. Toronto has a number of comedy venues, and even has its own comedy college. The oldest and the most famous venue for laughter is Second City. If you fancy yourself as a bit of joker, then sign up to one of the regular weekly drop-in improv classes. MysteriouslyYours or Yuk Yuk’s or are also great comedy venues. 13. Have A Brew Beer lovers needn’t bother with imports if they are trying to avoid the bland and mass produced. Microbreweries are going strong in Toronto. One of the best is Granite Brewery, whose bitters, ales and stouts are available only on their premises. You can drink in some more history with a pint at Steam Whistle Brewery, where, within a authentic vintage Canadian setting, you can join a tour to learn about combining hops and malts to create theatre’s. Together they make up North America’s only double-decker theatre complex. Then there is also the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, with it’s three stages in 19th-century tank houses downtown in the Distillery District. Also available are shows at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, or you could also enjoy a National Ballet performance. 11.
