51 EAT SMART! WHEN YOU EAT OUT. Help With Finding Healthy Restaurants In Toronto If you want to be sure the restaurant that you have chosen is clean and has the most options that will allow you to make healthy meal choices while your eating out, then ensure that you Eat Smart! The Toronto Dining Guide is a really great place to start. It is provided free by Toronto Public Health, and is a comprehensive guide to restaurants and cafeterias in the city that meet tough provincially defined standards enforcing restaurants that they must maintain cleanliness, and have health conscious menu choices. Annually Eat Smart! Ontario’s highly acclaimed Healthy Restaurant Program gives out Awards of Excellence to establishments that either apply or are nominated by their customers. Along with being listed online, restaurants are then provided with a certificate and a window decal to display. So what then does it take to get certified? The short version is that restaurants must: Have a 12 month record of safe food handling, including having passed their most recent Public Health inspection with nothing worse than three minor infractions. Have a minimum of one regular full time kitchen member of their staff who’s acquired their “Safe Food Handling” certificate. Have a variety of healthier food options regularly available (of course, it’s still up to you to actually choose the available healthier options when the time comes). TOP 10 TIPS FOR EATING OUT With today’s usual very busy schedules, it is not at all surprising that eating out has become a fairly common occurrence for the vast majority of people. According to the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association, meals or snacks from restaurants usually accounts for 1 out of 10 meal occasions for Canadians. Eating out is a nice treat every once in a while or a convenient option when you don’t have time to cook a meal. But all the fat, calories, sugar and sodium can add up quite quickly if you choose to eat out regularly. Here are a few tips to help you make smart, healthy choices the next time you eat out or eat on the run. 1. Keep it small. The portion sizes at fast food counters and at restaurants are usually bigger than what you would normally decide to eat at home.
