53 TIPS TO DINE OUT ON A BUDGET • • • • • • • • Curb your everyday expenses. Try thinking just one less specialty coffee, soft drink and candy bar in a week. Keep your eyes open. Look for new restaurants in town, they typically offer you a grand opening special deal. Check your local newspapers. Find the ads for lunch and dinner specials or early bird specials and look for coupons as well. Take advantage. The Chambers of Commerce and visitors centers are where you will usually find great restaurant discount coupons. Choose lunch instead of dinner. Lunch menus usually offer the same entrees as dinner ones, just smaller portions that have a smaller check. Dine out during the week. Pricing is better than on the weekends as often the menu prices will be raised higher over the weekend. Go vegetarian. Vegetarian entrees are usually less expensive than ones made with meat. Go ethnic. Some ethnic foods are much better bargains than traditional Canadian foods and will add much more variety to your diet. • • • DINING OUT AND WATCHING YOUR WEIGHT Start With Soup Or Salad Filling your empty stomach with soup or a salad before any meal is a good way to keep you from binging on your entrée later. Be selective! Clear, broth-based soups which are filled with healthy vegetables are particularly good choices when it comes to appetizers because soups in general tend to considerably decrease your appetite. A small garden salad will also help hold you over until your entrée arrives. Ask for the dressing “on the side” so you can spoon on just a tablespoon. Enjoy Sauces On The Side The term “on the side” now probably just rolls off your tongue without any pause at all, and it’s with good reason. Salad dressing, cream sauces, mayonnaise and butter should always be ordered on the side which is the most sensible way to control the quantity of fat you eat in restaurants. You can still enjoy the decadent sauces but limit intake. Dine early. Many restaurants do offer specials before 6 p.m. It’s perfect for you making a show on time. Share an entrée. Or you can share items that are off the appetizer menu. Many restaurants serve portions that are too large for one person to finish anyway and its you that has to pay for the extra. Keep a look out for ‘Happy Hours’. Many places offer savings on their food menus during these times. Normally they occur between 4pm and 6pm but some places do have them later in the evening.
