54 Order Foods Grilled Instead Of Fried Go for fish, steak, or some chicken that is grilled, not fried or drenched in sauce. Look for entrées that are blackened with a spice rub or marinated in a balsamic vinaigrette or a wine sauce. Those tend to be healthier than food served with cream or butter. Also, look for grilled meats served with a vegetable-based sauce such as salsa. Take A Pass When you see the words battered, fried, deep fried, buttered, sautéed, scalloped, crispy, Alfredo sauce, cheese sauce, thick sauce, creamed, rich, hollandaise, mayonnaise, gravy, au gratin, pan pastry, or en croute, then it usually means that the food is higher in fat and calories. Have Just One Piece Of Bread Most of us inhale the bread basket while waiting for our entrée. If you enjoy eating a good French or sourdough bread, then enjoy one piece at the table but just one, and go easy on the butter. Ask For Substitutions These days, most restaurants are very eager to please diet-conscious diners. So simply ask the wait-staff for substitutions. Request a side salad instead of fries. Or order your omelet with low-fat cheese and egg whites. Share Entrées Or Get Leftovers To Go Share an entrée with a friend. Waiters are happy to bring an extra plate. At many restaurants, they will even split the entrée onto two plates for you.
