Antioxidants by themselves do not become free radicals by them donating an electron because they are stable in either form. Antioxidants convert free radicals into harmless waste products which are then eliminated from your body before any damage can be done. Thus the antioxidants act as scavengers, helping to prevent cell and tissue damage. Antioxidants like vitamin C will defend against mouth, larynx, and esophagus cancers. WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS? A free radical is a molecule that has one electron missing. These free radicals are very unstable and attack the nearest stable molecules to get an electron. This results in a chain reaction and new free radicals are then formed. In a molecule, atoms are bound together by sharing electrons with other atoms. When weak bonds split, free radicals are formed. What Produces Free Radicals? Free Radicals are formed in the body for a number of reasons. The main four are: 1. 2. Burning of oxygen by your bodies cells so that energy can be produced. Many environmental factors such as pollution, 3. 4. Free Radical Damage Normally a body can handle these free radicals, but an excessive quantity of free radicals likely will damage cells and are not good for health. If the free radicals take electrons from important components in the body, like protein, fat or DNA, they then can create health problems such as cataracts, heart disease, arthritis, and cancer.
