2024-2025 Student Resource Handbook

68 The conflicts associated with a disorder such as Depression or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) deluge a student with stress. The most prevalent psychological disorders found in students may cause symptoms such as lack of motivation, lack of concentration and constant fatigue. Full-time students with part-time jobs make sacrifices to keep up with intensive curriculum. Bank and government debts, rent, tuition, books, supplies, and medication costs, minimum wage job stresses and the huge quantity of their course workloads can very easily overwhelm students, debilitating their sanity and equanimity. This fact proves that post-secondary school can intensify the effects and, in a lot of the cases, can cause depression in an otherwise healthy individual. Some psychiatric doctors are convinced that a staggering half of North America’s population is mentally unfit. This might leave most wondering, “could something be ailing me”? If you find that you are experiencing any altered sleeping/eating habits or you’re having any trouble concentrating on work for more than even a few minutes at a time, you may be afflicted. Ask your family doctor for advice. Check your school’s disability policy. Most schools will have fair accommodations for students who provide documented proof of any psychological impairment. Although it is difficult A student that suffered with clinical depression spent two years battling the stresses of school life, unwittingly taking part in a fight he could not hope to win. The individual was unaware of his disease until his fourth of six semesters, when he was removed from his program after he had failed three of six courses. His $10,000+ loss made it impossible for him to return to his schooling again. This situation could have been avoided and he may have graduated. It is an example of how mental disabilities can cripple a student’s usual ability to succeed. FAMILY COUNSELLING / SERVICES Children’s Aid Society 416-924-4646 ...............
